Tee off in Tenerife with Paul McGinley’s Clubs
Paul McGinley’s golf club hire operation, ClubstoHire.com has opened two new stores at airports in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
The expansion into the Canary Islands brings the number of ClubstoHire.com outlets across Europe to 11, as the company continues to benefit from golfers shunning high surcharges to take golf clubs on budget airlines and short haul carriers.
The Canary Islands stores join outlets at Antalya, Alicante, Murcia, Dublin, Malaga, Edinburgh, the Isle of Man, Lisbon and Faro.
Saving golfers €1m in 2012
McGinley’s company says it is on course to save its customers €1m on excess baggage charges during 2012.
ClubstoHire.com director Tony Judge, said: “Nearly 13 million passengers use the airports at Tenerife each year, while the airport at Gran Canaria handles around 10.5 million – that’s an awful lot of people, many of whom may find themselves faced with excess baggage charges, particularly if they’re planning on playing golf while they’re away.
“And that’s where ClubstoHire.com comes into its own; if only a quarter of one per cent of those passengers are looking to carry golf clubs, renting from us could save more than €1.7 million – that’s a staggering figure and shows just how exploitative the airlines have become.”
Only recently, Ryanair increased its charges for golf bags to a minimum of £100 per return flight, while, before the end of last year, Air Berlin raised its golf bag carriage charge to €100 return.
The majority of European carriers now charge upwards of £60 return.
Hiring a set of clubs from ClubstoHire.com starts from just €35 per week, with options available from TaylorMade (including the R11S driver and the new RocketBallz), Callaway, Wilson and MD Golf.
Shoe hire is also available.
Views and Volcanoes: Golf in Tenerife
Global Golfer’s Editor Matthew Moore says:
“Tenerife is an under-rated golf destination. Its biggest attraction is its year-round spring like climate which almost guarantees that you’ll play under blue skies. Its second best asset is the quality of its courses and the concentration of excellent golf in the South of the Island.”

Tee of at Tecina
Tecina Golf on the neighbouring island of La Gomera is a must-play course.
The 45-minute ferry ride from Los Cristianos is followed by a short bus journey, and while getting there is logistically complex, it is worth the added hassle to play a top quality golf course with stunning sea views and the backdrop of Tenerife’s Mount Teide Volcano.
Other excellent courses include Dave Thomas designed Abama Golf, the newest and best course on the island, and Buenavista Golf in the north of Tenerife, designed by the late Seve Ballesteros.
